STUDENT ONE:
The movie Zero Dark Thirty is about the process of the US military in their attempts to capture Osama Bin Laden which raised many different ethical conflicts. The main ethical conflict that jumped out at me was the used of interrogation tactics used, like waterboarding. Waterboarding is forbidden under US and international law, even though during this time it was used because of the threat to national security.
After viewing the film, I think the ethical conflict definitely made me think deep as to if I would allow this if I was conducting the interrogation. Given the circumstances of what had just transpired at the World Trade Center, I think I would allow the waterboarding and enhanced interrogation tactics to continue in order to prevent future attacks and hold those responsible. It was the severity of the event that lead to these tactics being used, and I would not condone them if the case was a simple assault or armed robbery. I would feel uncomfortable at first administering this form of interrogation, but I think the greater good of capturing terrorists outweigh the humiliation and degradation of one prisoner.
STUDENT TWO:
The movie I chose to watch is called The Prince of Tides which was very good in my opinion. The movie switches back and forth from the past to the present the entire time. The plot of this movie was about three children who grew up in an abusive home in the South. There was an incident of sexual abuse when three prisoners broke out and raped two of the children and the mother. The third child, Luke, got a gun and shot all the criminals. The mother after the incident, acted like nothing ever happened and told the children to never speak a word of it. Savannah, the young girl, didn’t take this quite well and ended up trying to commit suicide a couple times throughout her life. When she’s older, she makes another attempt to commit suicide and her Psychiatrist, Susan asks for Tom, her twin brother to go to NYC to fill her in on details of their childhood. Tom has a wife and three children in the Carolina’s and he and his wife are having some troubles. Tom is unable to show his wife the love and affection she so craves from their relationship. Tom decides to go to the city for a while to help his sister and give himself and his wife a chance to take a small break. Susan and Tom begin to have an affair while they are also trying to help his sister with details of the past. This dual relationship begins almost immediately but after Tom explains much of the abuse and the rape Savannah and he had been through, Tom’s work there is done. Although Tom’s wife had an affair as well back home, Tom decides to end the affair with Susan and return home to his wife and children who he missed dearly. Savannah finally gets help for her issues, as does Tom and they both end up in a better place than they started.
The main ethical conflict here is the dual relationship Susan, the psychiatrist and Tom have while trying to help his sister. Their sessions seem to come up repeatedly during their affair and outside the office. Their affair also seems to come up frequently while in therapy. Crossing these lines is dangerous which is why the code of ethics states to avoid sexual relationships with clients. Ramifications of this type of dual relationship could be exploitation of the client, harm to the client, or potential loss of professional license, although none which occurred in this movie. Overall, I felt this was a very well filmed movie and think everyone should watch it.
