INTS213003F GSU International Relations Pressing Problem Research
The major ongoing, scaffolding (building up), and recursive (involving revising work already done) assignment in this course is this writing and presentation assignment. Your assignment is to respond to a pressing problem about international relations. The title of your essay will be in the form of a question. And not any old question. It must be one of the questions that makes up the title of a chapter in our textbook (Jenny Edkins and Maja Zehfuss, eds., Global Politics, Second Edition), such as “Is the financial crisis part of everyday life” and “Why is people’s movement restricted”. Remember that your paper and presentation must engage with the material covered in this course. The dock in your grade if there is no relation will be serious.
This assignment consists of three portions, each of which will be graded:
Research and write a first draft. By the date scheduled you should submit a first draft of your paper, 7 pages long, double-spaced. The draft will be structured like the chapters in our textbook. It should consist of three sections: question, illustrative example, and general response/broader issues. Begin by choosing a question that is a chapter title from our textbook. Your paper should lay out the question and explain why you think this is an important problem to address. Secondly, it should provide a different illustrative example from the textbook, one that gives context to your question and allows you to explore your question. In the final section, your paper should review and comparatively analyze your own findings with responses to the question from the textbook, especially the general response and broader issues sections. What do the scholars discussed in the textbook have to say about the question, and how do your findings from your illustrative example research compare to their claims? How does your illustrative example take you in different directions from where others have gone? The third section is thereby a comparative study: you are comparing your own findings to the findings of others in your chosen textbook chapter. Be sure to include all three of these sections in your paper: question, illustrative example, and general response/broader issues. The first draft will be graded to merely meet the limited requirement that you have written a draft. You will either get 0/1 or 1/1. You will receive no written feedback for the first draft.
