BBA4751 Columbia Southern Monitor Employees Social Media Accounts Discussion
Based on Simms’ (1994) articulation of psychological privacy to promote development of self-identity, for example, do you believe that employers should have the right to monitor prospective and current employee’s social media accounts? Why, or why not?

Please respond to my classmate response below:
I can certainly see both sides of this argument. When I was hired by the hospital years ago, we signed an agreement acknowledging that our social media outlets would be monitored. We were also made aware that there would be serious implications if any slanderous or derogatory information regarding the hospital or hospital employees was found on our social media. I remember initially being put off by this agreement. However, I soon realized that any negative comments regarding any company on social media can affect their profitability. One satisfied patient or employee may tell approximately 1-2 people that they are happy, but one dissatisfied patient or employee will likely tell 25-50 other people all the negative aspects of their experience.
Also, when I was a small business owner for a short time, I would Facebook stalk potential employees that had applied for a job. I wanted to ensure who I was hiring was who they were said they were. I would have not followed their social media after that point, but being that my employees were often the face of my business, I wanted to make sure I knew exactly who I was hiring.
