With Week Five, the third Module I asked you to look at last week, Week Four, continues to assist us in several ways. First, it brings into focus the impact of women joining in the work force in WWII – both for the war effort, for individual women, and for the change that began to occur in American culture: women, even married ones, can be allowed or even expected to be part of the work force. Second, it opens up other means of doing women’s history: especially the use of ORAL interviews to get at the lived experiences of individual women. Taking interviews together, we gain insights that are shared. The group of interviews moves us beyond anecdotal evidence to a body of witnesses to events, experiences, and expectations that are culturally shared.
