When I think of myself as a Christian, I know that there are many areas of myself that need improvement. There are spots in my Christianity that do not align with God’s “rubric” and I see this through the mistakes I make . How do I become aware of these areas of weakness? I do so by constantly assessing myself. Whenever I am in a situation where I feel as though my actions were not quite right I refer to my “rubric”, also known as The Bible. I read from the many different teachings and exemplars in the bible and am able to grade myself as a Christian in regards to that particular situation. From reading the bible and assessing myself I am able to learn from my experiences and do things correctly in a similar situation. The same understanding for how Christians assess ourselves on our journey here on Earth should be out same understanding for assessing our students on science content for our science lessons. Authentic assessments differ from those that are traditional assessments. Authentic assessments require more performance skill to show mastery of a particular concept versus recalling information on choice based test much like traditional assessments. In my opinion these assessments are a more effective way of for an educator to analyze their students depth on knowledge. These type of assessments are essential to science education because students get to show their true application of the knowledge they have learned in school in real life. Mueller (2018) states “A considerable body of research on learning has found that we cannot simply be fed knowledge. We need to construct our own meaning of the world, using information we have gathered and were taught and our own experiences with the world” . When I think of the trials and tribulations I am faced with here on Earth, none of them were through pencil and paper. God is monitoring our actions and application of what he has taught us in our everyday life. The Bible states “Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom” (James 3:13, King James Version).
When lesson planning it is essential to use data from assessments you have gathered in order to direct how and what you will teach students in order to seal their achievement gaps or further extend and reinforce their learning if they do not have an achievement gap. In order to do this and as well plan for authentic assessment, Mueller (2018) created a diagram that shows what an educator needs to identify and create in order to successfully plan for authentic assessment. The educator needs to first identify the objective, or what the learner should be able to do based on the learning standard. The educator must then identify the authentic task their student will perform in order to show mastery of the learning objective. The educator must then outline what mastery is and create the various levels of mastery within a rubric. The data gathered from this authentic assessment can be powerful for an educator to further guide his or her future instruction over the specific science standard they are learning.
