PAPER TOPIC:
Each student will choose one main topic: choose either cardiovascular disease or cancer. From your main topic, you will research and report your findings on a specific sub-topic of your choosing. This paper is not a summary or general explanation/lesson on yourmaster topic. It needs to be hyper-focused on distinct aspect of yourmaster topic and spend no time writing about the basics of your topic. It should show your knowledge of the basics of the topic by having theability to correctly discuss a current, relevant sub-topic. Yoursub-topic should have to do with a specific examination of riskfactors, prevention, and/or treatments of your chosen master topic.
It needs to have a thesis and evidence from peer reviewed journals to support this thesis. Do not use I, Me, or My statements.
Assume the reader (me), already has a solid working knowledge of thetopic. Think of it like writing a paper for a fellow expert, findsomething interesting you would want to share with a fellow expert onyour master topic.
You must paraphrase all of your research. This is an activity to testyour ability at finding scholarly research articles, reading thosearticles, understanding those articles and putting the information youfound into your own words in a coherent example of writtencommunication. The process should go like this:
Choose one main topic: either cardiovascular disease or cancer. Thenget specific and choose a sub-topic. For example, if you chose”cancer”, then your sub-topic could be stem cell treatments for skincancer. You need to get very specific on your actual topic.

(My favorite databases are JSTOR and Science Direct – Please see the https://www.marypoffenroth.com/research (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for more information
While reading these journal papers, pay special attention to theAbstract, Introduction, Background/Significance and Discussion sections.Take your own notes, do not just highlight.
Drawing upon your research, gather and distill the knowledge youhave just gained about your specific sub-topic and write your paper, inyour own words, describing this new and novel information for aUniversity level audience. You want to summarize your findings so thatthe reader will leave with a good understanding of what is cutting edgein your chosen topic’s field.
Students will complete a written scientific literature research paperbased on their chosen topic and specifically about what is new in theresearch/development of their topic. Primary literature sources shouldbe published after 2000. This could be a treatment, a cure, newinformation found about the disease/disorder, etc. The research papershould NOT include ANY background information unless it is absolutelyvital to an explanation of the new findings. This paper is about NEW,cutting edge research. You will explain the background information onyour topic during your oral presentation.
Minimum word count for the body of the paper (the portion you actually write) is 750 words. The minimum word count does not include citations. Max word count is 2000, including citations.
Remember, you need to have a clear focus on your subtopic, since you only have a maximum of 2000 words. Your paper must be wellresearched with scientific, peer-reviewed journals making up the bulk ofyour references. It should be an example of your best efforts atwritten communication. Part of your grade will be based on form, style, and grammar, while the content of your report will carry the heaviestweight towards your grade. You will be turning all written assignmentsinto Canvas – No hardcopy is needed. If the body of your paper, i.e. theportion you have written yourself, is under 750 words you will not get apassing grade on this assignment.
