Final Paper: Aftermath of 9/11 or Approved Topic for Historiographic Essay
This paper is on a topic of student choice based on ONE of the following three options:
1. Choose a topic related to the aftermath of 9/11, exploring a topic connected to the events of 9/11. In other words, how did 9/11 impact the issue you are choosing to research (thinking in the past 18 years). It could be about civil liberties, immigration, race relations, foreign policy, national security, surveillance, the military, veterans affairs, ongoing wars, the economy, contractors, or many other issues (many will be discussed in class the last two weeks).
2. If the topic of your first 9/11 paper is something that you can continue, or thread into the present, you could continue that theme accordingly for the final paper.
3. Some of you may wish to change gears entirely and choose another controversial event from US history about which to write the final paper. This paper should include historiographic discussion and disagreements, and recall our course them of “history in the making,” while also considering ways media and propaganda have framed or distorted the event of your choosing (e.g., Spanish/American War, Gulf of Tonkin, Assassination of JFK, etc.). This option should be written as a proposal to the instructor by Monday May 20th at latest. See me in class for more details or to discuss further.
Format: The paper is worth 40pts. and should be 4-6 pages double-spaced, 12pt. font, Times New Roman, cited properly in Chicago Style (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. with endnotes or footnotes. Students are responsible for choosing an appropriate essay topic. Do not try to write about too broad a topic, and please pick something about which you can “ask the right questions” as our Critical Thinking text authors would put it.
