Intro
I read a quote by Deepika Sharma, Principal at SRS International School where she wrote
Slide 1. School is the foremost fountain of knowledge children are exposed to. It gives a chance for them to acquire knowledge in various fields of education such as people, literature, history, mathematics, politics, and other numerous subjects.
As true as this is, to make it a little more specific to our current education system, children are exposed to knowledge on white people, a distorted history, and only half of the truth about politics. The system instead promotes inequality by assessing high-class children and ignoring lower-class children.
For example, admission opportunities. Status hierarchy is an indicator to measure intelligence in the current education system. Think about it: whos getting looked at first, a student from Beverly Hills with a 2.5 gpa or a student from Compton with a 3.9 gpa? Graduates in high-income neighborhoods shouldnt see success faster than peers in that of lower-income households just because of the system.
The education system needs improvement that helps children to understand humanity instead of people and instead of preferring material things and status differences. Perhaps, as a part of the reading, children can learn and become bilingual in Spanish and physical or health education students can get educated on the impacts of addictions.
Sir Ken Robinson said that instead of growing into creativity in school, we grow out of it. And I believe that whole heartedly, because I am a product. I went into the military after high school and did great because I could follow directions, but now that Im out I suffer anxiety and depression because I lack in creativity.
Slide 2. The 21st century wants students to be creative because the world is becoming technologically advanced. Students all over the world have had more years of schooling than they care to count. During this process, students are taught that making a mistake is a sin. We have planted in our students minds a picture of an entirely, carefully drawn life (Dalile). Back in the day reading, writing, and arithmetic was the advancement, but today the world is technologically advancing so those with creative minds can create technologies and bring more advancements.
I remember suffering through courses such as geometry. To this day they are still methods I dont comprehend. Something I also struggle with are credit scores, but only one of those categories will help me reach success. Had I been taught the ins and outs to credit scores instead of geometry I could be closer to success today.
I understand the education system relies on parents to teach some things at home, such as taxes but if they didnt learn it how can they teach it? Filing taxes to most is merely filling in blanks to the best of our ability, but do we really understand what and why were being taxed? Or who is even doing the taxing and why? What are my taxes being used for?
Slide 3. J Cole even rapped in his 2018 song Brackets
Yeah, I pay taxes, so much taxes, shit don’t make sense Where do my dollars go? You see lately, I ain’t been convinced I guess they say my dollars supposed to build roads and schools But my niggas barely graduate, they ain’t got the tools Maybe ’cause the tax dollars that I make sure I send Get spent hirin’ some teachers that don’t look like them And the curriculum be tricking them, them dollars I spend Got us learning about the heroes with the whitest of skin One thing about the men that’s controlling the pen That write history, they always seem to white-out they sins Maybe we’ll never see a black man in the White House again I’ll write a check to the IRS, my pockets get slim Damn, do I even have a say ’bout where it’s goin’? Some older nigga told me to start votin’ I said “Democracy is too fuckin’ slow” If I’m givin’ y’all this hard-earned bread, I wanna know Better yet, let me decide, bitch, it’s 2018 Let me pick the things I’m funding from an app on my screen Better that than letting wack congressman I’ve never seen Dictate where my money go, s
Bottom Line
The education system should be according to the requirement of a growing world instead of relying on tradition.
For example
It used to be hard to make money, now its harder not to. Youtubers, bloggers, to online retailers selling items simply around their house that are in great shape but just not used anymore, now days there are endless creative ways to make money and become your own boss and start businesses. Slide 4. START businesses not just APPLY for them.
Slide 5. Ill tell you about Deonté.
Deonté is living at home with a single mother who works long hours and whose dad isnt around much. He isnt receiving much in the way of instruction or guidance at home; mom had no formal education beyond high school and dad attended college on an athletic scholarship but dropped out early on because it was too challenging academically.
Fast forward a few years, Deonté struggled through pre-K and kindergarten. This affected both his behavior and grades. His classmates were ahead of him; they were taught to reading and basic math at home. Deonté is held back but seeing his classmates advance without him continues to take a toll on him mentally. With his mental state declining, hes sent to an alternative school. But in this alternative school Deonté takes a mental health course that improves his behavior, he takes Spanish and meets his best friend Sophia whose family is from Puerto Rico. He takes a physical education course that keeps him active, and he takes a fine arts class where he learns hes a gifted artist and talented writer. Hes becomes more balanced mentally and physically and develops better social skills. In his life skills course, he was able to share ideas with his mom that improved both of their lives and now they help others. Deonté was able to skip the 4th grade and graduated 5th grade top of his class. Slide 6. And now Deonté and Sophia make more than their parents from youtubing their friendship for both English and Spanish viewers.
For the country to be more successful as a whole the current education system needs to be broken. There are flaws in the system that are affecting children and their future. The system is promoting inequality and status hierarchy instead of humanity and vision. The new system should promote creativity and teach students to think out of the box.
If we really want to eliminate poverty, unemployment and other social evils, we need an updated education system that fits the requirements of the 21st century, wealth, not just money.
