San Jose University Stem Cell Research Peer Reviewed Journal Paper
Peer Reviewed Journal Paper
This will be a literature review paper based upon your research in the peer-reviewed journals.
PAPER TOPIC:
Each student will choose one main topic from the list of available topics on our google docs page hyperlinked in the module as “Choose your topic here” Master Topic Projects This main (or master) topic will serve as the topic for your oral presentation and your paper. From your main topic, you will research and report your findings on a specific sub-topic. This paper is not a summary or general explanation/lesson on your master topic. It needs to be hyper-focused on distinct aspect of your master topic and spend no time writing about the basics of your topic. It needs to have a thesis and evidence from peer reviewed journals to support this thesis. Do not use I, Me, or My statements.
Assume the reader (me), already has a solid working knowledge of the topic. Think of it like writing a paper for a fellow expert, find something interesting you would want to share with a fellow expert on your master topic.
You must paraphrase all of your research. This is an activity to test your ability at finding scholarly research articles, reading those articles, understanding those articles and putting the information you found into your own words in a coherent example of written communication. The process should go like this:
Choose your topic from the list of topics available (See Above Link) First come, first serve : only one topic per person.
Research peer reviewed journals through sjlibrary.org (My favorite databases are JSTOR and Science Direct – Please see the Research Methods lecture for more information
While reading these journal papers, pay special attention to the Abstract, Introduction, Background/Significance and Discussion sections. Take your own notes, do not just highlight.
Drawing upon your research, gather and distill the knowledge you have just gained about your specific sub-topic and write your paper, in your own words, describing this new and novel information for a University level audience. You want to summarize your findings so that the reader will leave with a good understanding of what is cutting edge in your chosen topic’s field.
Students will complete a written scientific literature research paper based on their chosen topic and specifically about what is new in the research/development of their topic. Primary literature sources should be published after 2000. This could be a treatment, a cure, new information found about the disease/disorder, etc. The research paper should NOT include ANY background information unless it is absolutely vital to an explanation of the new findings. This paper is about NEW, cutting edge research. You will explain the background information on your topic during your oral presentation.
Minimum word count for the body of the paper (the portion you actually write) is 750 words. The minimum word count does not include citations. Max word count is 2000, including citations.
Remember, you need to have a clear focus on your subtopic, since you only have a maximum of 2000 words. Your paper must be well researched with scientific, peer-reviewed journals making up the bulk of your references. It should be an example of your best efforts at written communication. Part of your grade will be based on form, style, and grammar, while the content of your report will carry the heaviest weight towards your grade. You will be turning all written assignments into Canvas – No hardcopy is needed. If the body of your paper, i.e. the portion you have written yourself, is under 750 words you will not get a passing grade on this assignment.
FORMAT:
Minimum word count for the body of the paper (the portion you actually write) is 750 words. The minimum word count does not include citations. Max word count is 2000, including citations.
No need to have a title page or include any personal identification information since it will be submitted through Canvas and all your information will be pre-populated for you. Just include the title of your paper at the top of your first page of text.
No need to include page numbers or page identifiers
This is NOT a free-form document. IT MUST BE ORGANIZED INTO THE 4 SECTIONS OUTLINED BELOW – no need to place section titles.
No previous example of a paper will be provided for two reasons: 1) that violate FERPA laws and 2) creates a stagnant box that everyone then tries to replicate. As long as your citations are in CSE Name Year Style and you are following an accepted grammatically correct style of the English language, you will be fine. This means, that you may have your literature cited section and in-text citations in CSE Name Year Style and the rest of your paper can be formatted in the style you are most accustomed to writing in, i.e. APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.
Introduction: describe the topic, indicate the scope/focus/thesi
