Scientists Rise up Against Statistical Significance Reading Response
There are two responses required
1- Please read, “Scientists rise up against statistical significance” (Nature).
Why do the scientists believe that statistical significance should be abandoned? Explain in your own words why the results in one of the two studies discussed at the beginning were incorrectly interpreted. Explain why dichotomous thinking is a problem in determining if a result is significant. Why do they argue that “confidence intervals” should be renamed “compatibility intervals”?
2-
Please read Pearl chapter 8. What is “mediation analysis” and why is it important for establishing causality? What are direct and indirect effects? Please provide an example of how mediation analysis could be applied to your area of graduate study. Extra points for those who include drawings of causal paths (use the “line” tool in Word; I am not sure what the Pages version is).
Chapter 8 is attached.
